Lobster Sports Phenom II Club Series Machine Tennis Ball Machine Review

Lobster has been around since 1970 and it is popular for its range of tennis ball machines. Nonetheless, Sports Phenom II Club Series is the best tennis ball machine ever manufactured by Lobster.

It is a stationary machine and electricity powered, featuring all programs that a tennis player needs to improve his performance.

From its design to range of cool features, this machine comes at a very reasonable price. It is fully programmable and offer you with superior performance.

Without further ado, let me take you through its detailed review.

Technical Details

This machine can literally do anything you want. From holding 250 balls at a time to shooting them at 35-80 mph speed, it will give you the best playing experience on the court.

Though it is quite a heavy machine, weighing a whopping 99 pounds which makes it difficult to move it around and thus it is not easily portable.

Its feed rate varies between two and nine seconds and has an option for random interval as well. This feature shoots the ball at the will of the machine.

The Good

Below are the key features of this machine.

New Control Panel with 20-Function RC

Phenom II comes with a new control panel with a sleek design. It is known as the “Lexan” control panel which uses touch-buttons instead of the dials, knobs and switches. There is a digital LCD, allowing you to go through all the menu options and settings.

Don’t worry if you think of it too much advanced. This control panel is extremely user-friendly and can be operated easily by a young player.

While this is an optional feature but if you want to operate your machine with a wireless remote control, it can be purchased separately. It has 20-function control on it and lets you adjust the settings with a push of a button.

Random Oscillation and Variable Speed & Spin

Like Lobster Sports Elite 2 Portable Tennis Ball Machine, Lobster Sports Elite Grand Four Tennis Ball Machine and Lobster Sports Elite 1 Portable Tennis Ball Machine, Phenom II club series comes with three pre-programmed six shot drills that simulate popular styles like grinder, power baseliner and grinder, allowing you to get a hold of some difficult shots.

You can also mix up these drills with more speed, trajectory and spin and practice at a whole new level to play against the toughest players in the world.

As mentioned before, Phenom II comes with three unique drills. These include:

  • Grinder Drill: This is a six ball drill which utilizes the ball court and incorporates spin in every shot. This drill challenges you both physically and mentally with high, moderate and loopy spin shots
  • Power Baseliner Drill: Another six ball drill that uses full back court with a lot of speed but less spin. This gives you the experience of how it feels playing in an explosive style which involves both pace and aggression. This drill will polish your attacking style
  • All-Courter Drill: This is a combination of grinder and power baseliner drill. It varies the ball with more or less spin and speed, thus giving you a tactical play style.

3-Line Function

Other than drills, it also features 3-Line function. This is probably one of the most extensive 3-line functions found in any tennis ball machine. This feature includes three versatile positional settings as well which includes narrow, medium and wide. This allows you to groove your forehand and backhand ground stroke and even use it as a way to warm up your shots.

The Bad

Here are some “Oopses” we found in Phenom II.

Remote Control Is Optional

Its wireless remote control feature is optional and must be paid for extra. If you want to upgrade it to a remote controlled machine, you will have to pay some extra bucks.

Another thing we didn’t like is that it requires a feed light indicator.

Material & Construction

Phenom II uses a durable plastic construction that won’t break easily and is ready to bear the harshness of any environment.

Overall Performance

Overall, Lobster Phenom II Club series offer you an impeccable performance that even the most expensive machine don’t.

Who Is It For

We would recommend Phenom II to intermediate and advanced level players only.
