Wilson Blade 98 18×20 Tennis Racquet Review

Looking for a tennis racquet which offers maximum control, speed and power? You probably need the Wilson Blade 98 which is designed for the advanced level players who play aggressively on the court.

Wilson Blade 98 18x20

It is not only a popular racquet but also one of the cool tennis rackets available on the market.

While it is a pro level tennis gear, it is relatively easy to play and won’t cause any burden on your arms.

Below is my honest Wilson Blade 98 18×20 Tennis Racquet Review with all of its features, specifications and performance on the court.

Technical Details

As the name tells, Blade 98 comes with a 18×20 string pattern which is quite dense and this provides you extra control over your shots to produce some lethal backstrokes.

It has parallel drilling which provides consistency and a forgiving string bed which is more responsive and dramatically increases the sweet spot area.

Just like the Wilson Blade 104, it has a solid graphite and basalt construction which not only improves the flexibility of this racket but also helps to increase the contact time with the ball on its string bed.

The Good

Below are the key features of Wilson Blade 98.

The moment you grab this racket in hand, you will feel a unique sense of comfortability. It doesn’t feel heavy and weighs only 11.3 ounces. I would recommend to start with a warm up game to get used to the weight of this racket and then step into the real game.

Important to note that swinging the racket will give you a heavier feel as it is an advanced level tennis gear, still it won’t sprain your arms and you can play for hours.

A big advantage it has in terms of the added weight is the extra power it helps to generate at the time of contact. This is why it is advertised as a racket for the aggressive players.

Blade 98 almost feels like a pop off of its string bed. The moment you make the contact with the ball, you will feel the response in your hands which is very much important. Too much of muted feel can cut the mind connection with your game and make you lose all your focus.

The pop up feel is because of the graphite-basalt in its frame.

Because of its superior construction, it enhances the response to off center hits and prevents twisting of the racket even if you hit it off its center.

One of the big advantages of its unique feel is better serves on the court. It nicely transfers power into your shots without sacrificing the control over your game and ensures that your shots are of maximum accuracy.

You’ll get familiar with its precision as you see the ball land exactly where you want it to.

This terrific combination of control, power and stability in a single gear will make you win your games.

Its graphite + basalt constructed frame not only makes it lightweight but highly durable as well. This material combination adds a bit of flex in its frame which increases the contact time with the ball on its string bed.

Because of more contact time, you will have better control and feel.

Parallel Drilling

This new features offers more consistency off its string bed and increases the sweet spot area. Wilson had made it possible by drilling its grommet holes in such a way that they are parallel to each other.

As a result of this parallel drilling, you will get more string movement at the time of contact and thus a large sweet spot area.

Dense String Pattern

Quite obvious from the name, Blade 98 features a dense string pattern of 18×20. This is also known as closed pattern which is similar to Wilson Six One 95 18×20 and Yonex EZONE Ai 98 Lite.

The extra density in its string bed offers you more control. Though it may not generate that natural top spin as you swing it, still you can use your skills to apply spin to the ball.

If you prioritize spin over control, 1 racket with 16×19 pattern is your best choice.

The Bad

Here were some “Oopses” we found in Wilson Blade 98.

Power Loss

Despite the fact that Blade 98 offers you exceptional control and power in your shots, still it sacrifices a little power for more control.

The extra swing weight it has can really help to overcome this loss of control by generating a faster swing. If you love a balanced combination of control and power, Babolat 2018 Pure Drive is probably one of your best go to options. I’ve reviewed it in detail in one our previous posts.

Satisfactory Serves

We were definitely impressed with the level of precision and maneuverability that Blade 98 offers. But the loss of power and spin because of superior control can make your serves less effective and you may have to put in extra effort when serving.

Unstrung With No Cover

Unfortunately, Wilson Blade 98 comes unstrung and doesn’t include a cover. For this price, it should be strung and must have a convenient cover.

Material & Construction

Wilson Blade 98 18x20

Likewise Wilson Blade 104, it also features a Braided Graphite + Basalt frame construction which adds the extra flex in its frame. So, even if it feels stiff, you will still get a smooth transition on the court.

It has a dense string pattern which offers more control and power transfer.

Overall Performance

This racket will help a lot in getting better at your lateral movements. It increases your speed on the court and will definitely help you improve your tennis skills.

Who is it for

If you think you are an aggressive player who is at the top of his game, only then you should invest in this racket. It’s not for the intermediate or beginners.

So, that’s it for today tennis peeps. I hope this review was helpful. If you have any questions or confusions, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
